According to the myth, the first Vietnamese persons were descended from the Dragon Lord - Lac Long Quan - and the Immortal Fairy - Au Co. Lac Long Quan and Au Co had 100 sons. The eldest son became the first in a line of early Vietnamese kings, generally known as the Hung Kings (Hung Vuong or the Hong Bang Dynasty). The Hung Kings named their country which located on the Red River delta in present-day northern Vietnam as Van Lang. Many legends from this period offer a glimpse into the life of the people, such as the Legend of the Rice Cakes, the Legend of Giong Hero, the Legend of the Magic Crossbow. Besides such myths as we have mentioned above, the Vietnamese also have others that are similar to many Greek or western myths. One of these that explain our own situation in a tropical and monsoon land, and the most beautiful myth no doubt must be the story of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh.

The sixth generation King had an extremely beautiful daughter, and he did not wish her to marry just any prince who came her way. He consulted with his court to send out a proclamation far and wide to the effect that he was seeking a suitable partner for his daughter. One day there came at the same time two very handsome, young noblemen proposing to the princess. They turned out both to be equally distinguished, talented, and powerful. Son Tinh is the God of the Mountain and Thuy Tinh is the God of Ocean. The Hung King decided to send them both away, saying that the next day whoever turned back sooner with the proper wedding offerings would become his son-in-law.

The next day, from dawn, Son Tinh, the Mountain God, presented with all the proper wedding offerings. He was-therefore given the hand of the princess. Thuy Tinh could not accept Hung King’s defeat. Furiously, Thuy Tinh rised the waters of the rivers and made the land flooded. But Son Tinh was imperturbable in his palace in the mountains; all he needed to do was to get his mountains to rise a little bit higher when the waters threatened to flood them. After several weeks of trying to overcome his rival by raising the waters, Thuy Tinh finally had to concede defeat and order the waters to withdraw. This happened at the end of the monsoon but Thuy Tinh never fully reconciled to his failure. Every year he still tries to cause the battle again and that was the reason why monsoons come to Vietnam.

It is believed that the high water currents come every year because Thuy Tinh is fighting with Son Tinh for seeking to gain My Nuong again.

Musical Play: “Hung King choose son-in-law”: Throughout this play, there are some performance adding alternatively, which makes the play more special and meaningful. From this play, we want to introduce foreign friends to Vietnam, including every field from culture to economics in S-shape strip of land.
